Shaun Ryder is an Unhappy Monday because he gets no royalties from his most famous lyrics. The star says he isn’t getting a penny in rights for his “Twisting my melon man” line because the song it is part of – Step On – is a cover version.

The original song is He’s Gonna Step on You Again, a 1971 hit by John Kongos. Shaun said: “John Kongos is a tight git. We don’t get a penny of that....'Twisting my melon man, call the cops’ we don’t get a penny of it, no.

I said to him and his people ‘give us one per cent’. [they said] ‘No,f*** off’.“ But last night John hit back in a statement to the Mirror.

And he pointed out that the phrase - Twisting my melon man - was used by the late actor Steve McQueen and was not even Shaun's own invention.
