Grey's Anatomy Ups Robert I. Mesa To Recurring; Making Him The First Indigenous Doctor On Series

Robert I. Mesa is making a little bit of Grey’s Anatomy history. According to Variety, the actor has been upped to recurring status and that makes him the first indigenous doctor to be featured on the show. Robert made his debut on the show in the third episode as intern James Chee.

His next appearance will be in the episode airing on April 15. Dr. Chee is part of the new class of interns at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, who are embarking on their careers as doctors during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his first appearance, Dr. Chee was hazed by neurosurgeon Tom Koracick (Greg Germann), and forced to do data entry — only to discover that the reason it wasn’t working was that all of the patients had died of COVID. Robert is a Navajo/Soboba
