Greenock murder-suicide husband killed wife before stabbing himself through heart

A man stabbed his wife to death before turning the knife on himself.Neil Mclaughlin, 57, killed his spouse of 25 years, Alison, with a wound to the neck and body before fatally stabbing himself in the heart.The shocking details of the murder-suicide, which rocked a small community in Greenock earlier this month, have been made public after their deaths were officially registered.The bodies of the tragic pair – who had just became grandparents – were discovered at their home on January 5 by cops.The death certificates show that shop assistant Alison, 53, died from stab wounds to her neck and trunk.

While Neil, a roofer, who was born in the US, died from a stab wound to his heart. The times of both deaths were given as 5.44pm.Police Scotland previously confirmed that the death of Alison was being treated as murder while that of Neil was not suspicious.

Despite the injuries, police publicly described the deaths as “unexplained” for several days.Officers had gone to their home on the Friday evening after concerns were raised for their welfare.The couple’s bodies were then discovered at the scene.Banff Road was sealed off by police who carried out a forensic examination of the house and interviewed local residents.The Mclaughlins were said to be well regarded in the local community and were described as a “lovely couple.” They became grandparents last month when daughter Robyn, 27, gave birth to daughter Alilynne.
