A great white shark cost fishermen nearly £2,000 after taking a bite out of a big-money tuna as they were reeling it in. David Sloan and his crewmates had battled a giant bluefin tuna for more than 90 minutes when they were caught off guard by a strange movement in the fishing line.
The shark had entered what Mr Sloan called its “death spiral” and was swimming in circles under the boat before the line was suddenly seized with renewed power.
But it was only when they finally reeled in the prize fish at Stellwagen Bank, 25 miles off the coast of Boston, that they discovered the predator had helped itself to the back half, amounting to £1,870 lost.
