A Greater Manchester Police officer who tried to rape a woman in a 'deplorable' violent sex attack will have his sentence reviewed by the Court of Appeal.

Ernesto Ceraldi was jailed for five years and four months at Preston Crown Court in June this year. He pleaded guilty to attempted rape and assault occasioning actual bodily harm at an earlier hearing.

The court heard the victim, from Rossendale, was left bloodied and bruised after the 44-year-old repeatedly punched and throttled her as he tried to force her to perform a sex act on him.

At the time, Ceraldi was off duty but was a serving tactical dog handler at GMP with 21 years service.
