A toll for the Clyde Tunnel in Glasgow for drivers living outside the city and a congestion charge are among the ideas being considered to boost the council's income.
Glasgow City Council will set its budget for 2025/2026 on Thursday, with council tax set to rise to fund investment in the city, reports Glasgow Live.The idea could see registration plates scanned for drivers who don't reside at a Glasgow address.
Ricky Bell, SNP city treasurer, has stressed the urgency of identifying new revenue streams to prevent the council's budget from diminishing: "If we sit and do nothing the council budget will just get smaller and smaller and smaller." Consultations are being held on a proposed tourist tax with a 5% levy on overnight stays in the city under consideration.
The funds could potentially generate £11m per year, but is unlikely to be rolled out until 2027.A political oversight group, set up last year, is now looking at other options to raise cash.
