Not Dead Yet starts off with a very sobering statement: “Local woman, 37, ruins old life.” That woman—Nell Serrano, who is played by Rodriguez—went all in on love until it “slapped her in the face,” then returned to her old job at a dying newspaper where she's relegated to working in the custodial closet to spend her days writing obituaries.
All to make ends meet and start life over. And yet, there's something uplifting about this story.“This woman has just kind of sunken into despair, and now she goes on this journey of self-reflection and growth,” Rodriguez tells Glamour from the set on her last day of filming season one. We need forgiveness in this world, and we need redemption.”While Nell's life couldn't be more different from Rodriguez's, the underlying theme of change and the unknown is something the 38-year-old understands, especially now.
She and , moved to Oregon during the pandemic. Splitting their time between Southern California and the Pacific Northwest is, as she calls it, a “different existence” but one full of healing and peace.
