A street in Germany is to be named after an RAF airman murdered by Nazis in the final months of the Second World War. John Scott, 24, parachuted to safety before his Lancaster bomber crashed near Frankfurt in December 1944.

He was taken prisoner but the local police chief had him shot, in a flagrant breach of the rules of war. The killing so shocked locals they vowed never to forget Scott.

Now in a poignant gesture they are naming a street “John Scott Way” at a new housing complex in Weidenhausen. Local MP Markus Wege said: “We want to show that we in Weidenhausen are not shirking from coming to terms with history.” Scott was flight engineer in a 57 Squadron Lancaster during a raid on the town of Giessen which killed 400 people.
