Gavin Newsom is convening a special session of the state legislature next month to “protect California values amid the incoming administration of Donald Trump.
The special session, to start on Dec. 2, will focus on boosting state legal resources and funding to protect civil rights, reproductive freedom, climate action and immigrant families, Newsom’s office said in a statement.
That includes state litigation as well as federal lawsuits “aimed at undermining California’s laws and policies.” “This is the first of several actions by the Newsom administration, in partnership with the Legislature, as the Governor begins shoring up California’s defenses against an incoming federal administration that has threatened the state on multiple fronts,” the governor’s office said.
It’s also a signal that Newsom plans to be one of Donald Trump’s most high profile Democratic foes. On Wednesday, Newsom released a statement in which he said, “Federalism is the cornerstone of our democracy.
