Gas engineers are working around the clock to get families back into their homes following a fatal explosion in Edinburgh.Emergency services were called to the deadly blast on Baberton Mains Avenue at around 10.25pm on December 1.
Sadly an 84-year-old man named James Smith died following the incident. A 43-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man were taken to hospital for treatment, where their condition is currently unknown.Edinburgh City Council Leader Cammy Day said: "My thoughts continue to be with the family and friends of Mr Smith, and with those still affected.
We’re continuing to work with the Police and partners to provide full support to residents, including helping them get back into their homes as soon as it is safe to do so."I’d urge residents to consult our dedicated webpage for up to date advice and information on our response."On their site, Edinburgh Council added: "Residents will be allowed to return to their homes as soon as it is safe for them to do so, but unfortunately, for some, we still can’t be certain on timescales.
Initial assessments have been carried out but more detailed investigations, including structural assessments of damaged properties are still required."As the clear up continues and further progress is made, the scale of the current cordon area will be reduced as far as practicable but, as above, this will also be dependent on the completion of investigative work.
