Gareth Thomas says coming out as gay gave him strength to beat lockdown 'sadness'

Former Welsh rugby professional Gareth Thomas has told how coming out as gay has helped him to cope amid coronavirus. Gareth, who has spoken widely in the past about his mental health struggles, became one of the world's first professional athletes to come out as gay back in 2009.

Last year, he revealed he had HIV. In 2014, he told how close he had come to suicide after coming out to his ex-wife Jemma, revealing to BBC Radio 5 Live that he had "so much hatred for what [he] was" and the "horrible world [he] had created." Jemma supported Gareth throughout his public coming out.
