A furious politician has blasted plans to increase the cost of a garden waste permit in Renfrewshire – labelling the controversial idea "ridiculous".

Councillor Eddie Devine, who represents Paisley Southeast, has been angered by a proposal to hike the annual fee from £40 to £47 in the next financial year and further to £52 in 2026/27 and £57 in 2027/28.The potential surge is set to be considered by elected members at the council's infrastructure, land and environment policy board.

The permit scheme was rolled out by the local authority in July 2023.Councillor Devine said: "I've noticed there are fewer brown bins going out than there have been in the past.

This is what we predicted – people won't pay this amount of money and fly-tipping will go up."It's just ridiculous. They're trying to encourage people to recycle but they're putting obstacles in the way of people recycling.
