Franz Beckenbauer has passed away at the age of 78, his family have announced to the German Press Agency.The legendary centre-back is regarded as one of the greatest to ever play that position after a playing career gleaming with honours.
He featured most prominently for Bayern Munich and West Germany, who he won a World Cup and European Championship with. Beckenbauer also won four Bundesliga titles while he also managed West Germany and Bayern alongside work with Marseille.
He also had some time in the USA at New York Cosmos. Tributes have began to pour in for the former defendeer, who earned the nickname " Der Kaiser " (The Emperor), and is one of nine players to have won the World Cup, the European Champions Cup, and the Ballon d'Or, which was scooped on two occasions.
