Christmas can often be a stressful one, and it is thought that added financial pressures and family tensions over the festive season are often the main reasons why a relationship can break down at the start of the new year.
In January 2019, Relate, the UK’s largest provider of relationship support, said that it saw a 12 per cent increase in calls, with website visits up by 53 percent.
It is also thought that a rush of cases this month will create a real backlog for the courts, creating serious delays in divorce proceedings.
While a divorce is bound to take an emotional toll, there may be some practical steps that people can take with their finances which may at least help the process to go a bit more smoothly.
