Air Force veteran who retired with the rank of Major, hid a treasure chest in the wilderness after a 1988 cancer diagnosis. He wrote a poem with clues to its location and included it in his 2010 self-published memoir, “The Thrill of the Chase.” Fenn described filling the chest with gold nuggets and coins, antique jewelry with rubies and emeralds, and ancient Chinese jade carvings.
It was a tantalizing mystery, and some were unable to ignore the urge to search for it. Treasure hunters quit their jobs and depleted their life savings to search for Fenn’s treasure.
