Former St Mirren star Jamie McGrath insists he never wanted to join Aberdeen or Hibs in the winter transfer window. That’s because his eyes have always been set on lighting it up in the English Championship - with a view to making the step up to the English Premier League next on his wish list. The Ireland international decided against a switch to Pittodrie or Easter Road last month, instead opting to join English League One title hopefuls Wigan Athletic.Speaking exclusively to Renfrewshire Live Sport from his new home in England, he revealed he has always aspired to ply his trade in the English top flight.McGrath said: “It was very hard to leave St Mirren and was a very tough decision.“There was other interest in Scotland, but when I heard Wigan were interested that was where I wanted to go.

Nowhere else came into my thinking.“I have always wanted to try it out down south and, even though Wigan aren’t there quite yet, I want to get into the English Championship.“I want to see how high I can go and the Championship is one of the best and most competitive leagues in the world.“I know it’s technically a second tier division, but some of the teams in the league are massive, massive clubs.“Even League One has some very big clubs in and it will be a very difficult league to get out of.“But hopefully this can be a stepping stone because the Premier League is every footballer’s dream to play in.”
