Former Manchester United star Tony Young dies at 71 as tributes paid

Former Manchester United player Terrence 'Tony' Young has passed away at the age of 71, the club have confirmed. Young played 97 times for United between 1969 and 1976 after being born just a few miles from Old Trafford.

He broke into the first team during the 1972/73 season before being a key figure in the team that earned promotion to the first division the following campaign.

Mainly a right-back, 'Tony' could also feature at right wing. He also enjoyed spells with Charlton Athletic and York City after leaving United.

Writing a tribute on Young, the club wrote: "Our thoughts are with Tony's family and friends at this difficult time." Born in Urmston, Young caught the eye of United after his performances with Manchester and Lancashire Schools.
