Dimitar Berbatov has recalled a moment which shows just how desperate Sir Alex Ferguson was to knock Liverpool off their perch.

Berbatov moved to United from Tottenham on deadline day in 2008, after a summer long transfer saga between all three parties.

The Bulgarian, given the stress of the move, was told by Ferguson that once the deal was completed he could have a week-long break.

But as soon as the forward signed on the dotted line, the Scot went back on his promise and told him to prepare for United’s next game against Liverpool.
