Mira Nair – who gave Irrfan Khan his first film role in Salaam Bombay! (1988) – has recalled her final meeting with the star, as the Slumdog Millionaire star died aged 53 this week following a colon infection.
Filmmaker Nair met Khan when he was a student at the National School of Drama, and was looking to make a mark for himself in the film industry.
While she wanted to cast him in a larger role, he was too tall compared to the other cast and had to settle for being the scribe with a one-day job.
But the pair stayed in touch throughout his illustrious career in Bollywood and Hollywood (he also worked on her film The Namesake).
