On April 8, Father John Misty will share his fifth solo studio album Chloë and the Next 20th Century. The folk-rock singer-songwriter is leaving nothing on the table leading up to Friday's drop, having already shared the singles "Funny Girl," "Q4," and "Goodbye Mr.
Blue." Today he's shared one more called "The Next 20th Century." Misty's songwriting is divisive for its use of irony, and sometimes the music can fall under that weight when combined with his ostentatious stage persona.
However, he makes the best use of his wry sensibilities on "The Next 20th Century," placing a deep yearning next to humorous asides like Val Kilmer's role in Batman.
The song's epic composition makes it feel nothing less than deeply human, especially since you can't help but smile at its most absurd moments.
