The "brave and beautiful" child of a former Fast Show actor and TV presenter tragically took their life while studying at Oxford University.
Cal Shearer, 25, a neuroscience PhD student, was discovered deceased in their room at St John's College on October 30. Described as someone who "radiated warmth to all those around them," Cal was remembered fondly by grieving family and friends.
Despite volunteering for the Samaritans helpline, Cal had faced a long-standing struggle with mental health issues, a battle that their family has highlighted as part of the broader, yet not fully understood, crisis of suicides among autistic individuals identifying as trans.
A note left by Cal conveyed their awareness of being loved: "I love you and I know how loved I am. I am lucky to have so much love surrounding me." Mourning the loss are Cal's parents, Paul Shearer, known for his work on The Fast Show, and Vicky Licorish, a former children's TV presenter.
