‘Fargo’ season 5 casts Jon Hamm, Juno Temple and Jennifer Jason Leigh

Playing Roy Kent on Ted Lasso hasn’t just given Brett Goldstein the biggest success of his career, with an Emmy award and tons of acclaim to boot; the hot-tempered but bookish star-player-turned-coach role has given TV viewers one of the most indelible characters of our time. As a co-producer, writer and executive story editor on the show, Goldstein is a major part of its international success. His next project sees him re-teaming as EP and writer with Ted Lasso co-producer Bill Lawrence for Shrinking, another Apple TV+ series, about a grieving therapist played by Jason Segel, co-starring Harrison Ford.

Writer/Producer/Director Theodore Melfi has a different take than those who think independent filmmaking is becoming an endangered species, and in fact he tells me right now we are in “a golden age of independent film”. That may be one of the reasons he is bullish about both films he has at this week’s Tribeca Festival in New York City – independently produced movies he is helping shepherd along. On Corner Office which stars Jon Hamm he is an Executive Producer, and on American Dreamer he is the screenwriter as well as a producer of the comedy that stars Peter Dinklage, Shirley MacLaine, and Matt Dillon. Both are for sale and the bottom line is Melfi truly believes the audience will dictate whatever the perfect form of distribution is, whether it be theatrical, streaming, digital VOD, or a combination of all three.

Based on a character Jason Sudeikis originally created for NBC promos, Ted Lasso the guy evolved into Ted Lasso, the Apple TV+ comedy series. It quickly became a hit, securing 20 Emmy nominations and seven wins in its first season including for Outstanding Comedy Series. The second season premiered in July 2021, and a third season recently began filming.

Because it’s so drab and one-note, “Corner Office” leaves the viewer with lots of time to contemplate the Hamm Conundrum. To wit: in Jon Hamm, we have an actor who seems genetically engineered for movie stardom, a chiseled slab of masculinity who wears a suit like he was born to it, and is a magnificent actor, plus possesses an admirable refusal to take himself too seriously.

The new black comedy film Corner Office made its world premiere at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival in New York City on Thursday.Some of the cast, including Jon Hamm, Sarah Gadon and Kimberley Shoniker were on hand for its debut at the festival, which kicked off the previous day and goes until June 19.In the film, Hamm plays the lead role of Orson, a new company employee and compulsive bureaucrat whoinstantly develops a distaste for his office colleagues, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Maybe that’s why the actor was drawn to playing a lowly paper-pusher with a bad mustache and big dreams of occupying such a space in “Corner Office,” a low-key, screw-loose workplace satire that offers audiences a side of Hamm they’ve never seen before — and might not be in such a hurry to experience again, unless the toil-from-home blues of the pandemic have made them receptive to the call of cubicle life.Premiering at the Tribeca Festival, “Corner Office” is director Joachim Back’s slightly taxing cinematic take on “The Room,” a slender novel by Swedish actor-cum-author Jonas Karlsson, unread by me, that bills itself as “a short, sharp and fiendish fable in the tradition of Franz Kafka, Samuel Beckett and Charlie Kauffman.” Check, check and check, insofar as those three absurdist writers are concerned, though I’d quibble with the other descriptors in that pitch.

Predator prequel film Prey, due to arrive later this summer.Directed by Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane), the film focuses on the character Naru (played by indigenous actor and Legion star Amber Midthunder), who wants to “prove her worth as a warrior”.The full synopsis reads: “Set in the world of the Comanche Nation 300 years ago, the action-thriller follows Naru, the skilled warrior who fiercely protects her tribe against a highly evolved alien predator.”The video shows Naru attempting to evade a bear, before the creature is killed and dragged away by an invisible entity. “Whatever did this,” she says towards the end of the clip, which features a number of high-octane action sequences, “I can kill it.”Watch the trailer below.  Prey‘s filmmakers were committed to creating an accurate portrayal of the Comanche – and as such, the film features a Native Comanche producer (Jhane Myers) and a cast made up almost entirely of Native and First Nations actors, including Midthunder, Dakota Beavers, Stormee Kipp, Michelle Thrush, and Julian Black Antelope (per Hollywood Reporter).Prey will be the fifth main entry into the Predator franchise, which began with the Arnold Schwarzenegger 1987 film, followed by 1990’s Predator 2, 2010’s Predators and 2018’s The Predator. The series has also crossed over with the Alien franchise in 2004 film Alien vs.

AMC Networks’ IFC has given a thumbs-up to SisterS, a new original comedy-drama series from Sarah Goldberg (Barry) and Susan Stanley (Hotel Amenities). The series has been in development with Peer Pressure, Shaftesbury, RTÉ and Declan Lowney (Ted Lasso, Alan Partridge). Lowney will direct the first three episodes of the six episode, half-hour series.
