A man died in hospital after walking in front of a train when he was allowed to discharge himself from a mental health ward.

David Timlin, 51, was struck less than an hour after leaving Ward 19 of Hairmyres Hospital, East Kilbride, Lanarkshire last month.

He suffered appalling injuries and died in hospital on Christmas Eve.His niece Romany McGuinness, 29, said: “They said he was fit to leave and to make his own decisions but his family knew he wasn’t.“He had been in hospital since October but they let him out in November even though he was suicidal.“We cared for him round the clock, 24/7.
