Family left with hundreds of bottles after Scottish Government's recycling scheme axed

A schoolboy and his mum have been left with mountains of rubbish after a controversial drinks recycling scheme was cancelled.

Joey Collins, eight, and his mum Lynsey managed to turn trash into treasure by collecting more than 16,000 empty bottles and cans in their village.But after the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) was abandoned for at least two years, they’re trying to work out what to do with everything they’ve collected.

The family, from Tarbolton in Ayrshire, spotted an opportunity to help Joey’s football club, the Hurlford Reds, when their local Sainsbury’s installed reverse vending machines ahead of the DRS rollout earlier this year.The supermarket was offering customers a 5p voucher for the store for every item they recycled before the scheme was due to officially launch.

But due to rows with the UK Government over glass recycling and criticism from businesses about costs, Holyrood ministers announced the scheme would pause until at least 2025.The DRS would have given people 20p back for every bottle or can they returned to shops.
