Face masks could be ditched by summer as life starts to return to normal, according to scientists advising the government. The protective coronavirus coverings have been mandatory in shops and on public transport for the latter half of the pandemic.

But the UK could scrap masks as soon as vaccines take over as the key protection against catching and spreading the virus, a government science adviser source claims.

So far more than 33million first doses of the jab have been given to people around the UK. Boris Johnson is hoping to lift all lockdown restrictions from late June if key targets are met.
