But throughout a decade in charge, one milestone remained tantalisingly out of reach. Three times the Ammies reached the FA Cup second round, and three times they lost.
There have been league titles, trips to Wembley for play-off finals and cup finals, but never entrance into the holy grail for many non-league and Football League teams.
Until now. When it finally arrived, it was worth waiting for. Salford City beat Cheltenham Town 2-0 in December and then promptly saw the draw throw up a narrative-laden trip to face Manchester City.
