The former head of HMP Liverpool has spoken out about the deplorable conditions at what was once branded 'Britain's worst prison', with inmates living in 'feral' and animal-like states.Pia Sinha, who was instrumental in overhauling HMP Liverpool following a scathing 2018 report by HM Inspectorate of Prisons, now leads the Prison Reform Trust.
During a December 2023 appearance on BBC 4s Desert Island Discs, she discussed her experiences with host Lauren Laverne.Reflecting on the dire situation when she took over, Ms Sinha recalled: "I'd worked in Liverpool before, so I was deputy governor there four years before that.
And so when I walked in, it shocked me just how much it had deteriorated, even in that short space of time. I knew the staff, they were pleased to see me.
And so I kind of felt that in amongst all of the sort of devastation of it, there was still like a beating heart in Liverpool prison.
