Stars, politicians and animal welfare campaigners have rallied round the call to ban tour companies promoting holiday “attractions” where elephants suffer horrific abuse.
Yesterday the Mirror revealed how numerous UK travel firms promote sites where elephants endure a life of suffering giving rides to holidaymakers and performing in circuses and at parades.
Stretching from Nepal through India to Sri Lanka and Thailand, these venues exploit elephants that have been stolen from the wild and put through a brutalising training process to make them submissive to humans.
Travel association ABTA says it "proactively encourages travel companies to either not offer, or move away from, unacceptable practices".
