Elton John has stated that he believes that ongoing coverage of the Phillip Schofield scandal is "totally homophobic". In a new interview, the 76-year-old had his say on former This Morning presenter, Phillip, his departure from ITV, and his recent affair admission.

The conversation moved to the 61-year-old when Elton was questioned about how gay rights have progressed. The singer told Radio Times: "There's a law now that, if you visit a doctor in Florida, they can refuse to treat you if you're gay, which I find just unbelievable. "Elton continued to say that in America there was a "growing swell of anger and homophobia" and believed that Britain's treatment of Phillip was "homophobic". "If it was a straight guy in a fling with a young woman, it wouldn't even make the papers. "The comments made by Elton come after Phillip stepped down from hosting This Morning last month.

At the time he said: "I have agreed to step down from This Morning with immediate effect, in the hope that the show can move forward to a bright future. "However, following his departure, the 61-year-old admitted that he had been having an affair with a younger man while on set.

He told the Daily Mail: "I did have a consensual on-off relationship with a younger male colleague at This Morning. "Phillip stated that he "met the man when he was a teenager" but it was only after he started working on the ITV show "that it became more than just a friendship".
