The thunderous roar of Elon Musk’s SpaceX rocket blasting off in Florida on Saturday was the sound of the starting gun being fired on an interplanetary space race more ambitious and more daring than the 1960s Cold War battle to put the first man on the Moon.
For billionaire Musk the moon is not the limit, but only the beginning, as he aims to be first to land people on Mars. His SpaceX mission from Kennedy Space Center was the first launch with astronauts from US soil since 2011.
It was also the first time a private vehicle had ferried astronauts to the International Space Station. But it is still NASA who are leading the charge for the Red Planet.
