Shirley Harrington was caught short at the tills in Asda, Bury, having left her purse at home on Wednesday, May 5. The customer had £35-worth of shopping in her trolley and began asking an assistant if she could leave the cart at the customer service desk, make the five-minute car journey home and return to pay for the goods.
But as Shirley explained to staff her predicament, to her surprise, a young man in a hoodie intervened. The man immediately took out his wallet and told her, 'put it on my card'.
