Eight men appeared before a court today accused of sexually abusing girls aged as young as 12. The men are accused of 'widespread sexual exploitation and abuse' of two victims aged between 12 and 16 between 2002 and 2006, Manchester Magistrates' Court was told.
The eight accused - aged between 33 and 66 - are Jahn Shahid Ghani; Ali Razza Hussain Kasmi; Mohammed Iqbal; Mohammed Ghani; Insar Hussain; Ikhlaq Yousef; Martin Rhodes and Aftar Khan.
All but one are from the Rochdale area. Of them, seven are charged with rape, among other sexual offences. One man, Insar Hussain, is charged with trafficking persons within the UK for sexual exploitation.
As the first defendant was brought into court, District Judge John McGarva told prosecuting lawyers: "I'm aware there is significant public interest in this case.
