Edinburgh Fringe stand-up Kirsty Mann reveals she has been living double life

Kirsty Mann doesn’t have to prepare for next month’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe – because she’s a doctor.The Londoner, whose mum is from Edinburgh, has kept being a doctor secret to the stand-up crowd for a decade because she wanted to be taken seriously as a comedian.It’s a topsy-turvy way of looking at things and has caused her some stressful moments – like her wedding when she had to come clean about her double life.Currently on a sabbatical from being a doctor, Kirsty brings her comedy debut to Edinburgh in under two weeks.While some are steeling themselves for a month of no sleep, Kirsty has been there.She said: “Being a doctor is good preparation for doing Edinburgh because it means I’m used to having breakfast at 7pm and being awake all night.”Kirsty, who worked in intensive care during the Covid pandemic, reckons it’s difficult to compare working as a doctor to doing stand-up.She said: “They’re both great jobs with extreme highs and lows.“As a hospital doctor, you always have a team around you to rely on, whereas as a comedian, when you’re onstage, you’re on your own, which is exciting but can also be very scary.”Her show is called Skeletons – a nod to her career as a doctor but also the one she kept in the cupboard for years – even before her wedding to fellow doctor-turned-research scientist Mark.Kirsty, who met Mark in A&E, said: “That was ridiculous.

There were lots of people in my life who didn’t know I was a doctor. So planning a wedding was stressful.“As a result, there were people to whom I had to confess (stressful), others to whom I couldn’t bear to confess, so didn’t invite (stressful), but there were some I couldn’t confess to AND couldn’t avoid inviting (REALLY stressful).“So I kept the medics and
