Eco campaigners call for universal free rail travel to be introduced after peak fares axed

Eco campaigners have welcomed plans to scrap peak fares at nationalised ScotRail - but insisted it should be a stepping stone to universal free rail travel.

Deputy First Minister John Swinney announced in Thursday’s Scottish Budget there will be a six-month pilot removing peak-time rail fares next year.

The move has been a key ask of unions and campaigners since the SNP-Green government took ScotRail into public ownership in April, with ministers conducting an ongoing “fair fares review”.

Transport - including aviation and shipping - is the biggest source of harmful climate emissions in Scotland, accounting for more than a third of the total.
