Earthquake recorded just 12 miles away from outskirts of Greater Manchester

An earthquake was recorded just 12 miles away from the outskirts of Greater Manchester on Tuesday evening (January 2). The seismic alert for the earthquake marked the location as near Buxton in the Peak District at around 5.30pm.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) recorded a magnitude of 2.5 and said the earthquake was three kilometres deep. Met Office Meteorologist Greg Dewhurst shared the alert on Tuesday night, which located around 2.5km - or around 1.5 miles - from Buxton's centre.

One person shared a post to Facebook, writing: "I heard a bang in my kitchen, as if something had fallen, but I couldn’t see what it was.
