The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is planning to stop six benefits for millions of people in 2024. If you're one of the many people on older benefits, you might see changes to your payments this year.
This managed migration is part of the government's plan to phase out older benefits and replace them with universal credit. This started a few years ago but was paused in 2020 because of the pandemic and didn't start again until early 2023.
But, the migration started up again in 2023. Since then, thousands of people have been sent letters telling them they need to make a universal credit claim within a certain time, and that their old benefit payments will eventually stop. In most cases, you can't claim for these payments anymore and usually need to put in a universal credit claim instead. The DWP has already started moving thousands of homes in south west and south east Wales, as well as in those elsewhere the UK, onto universal credit.
