The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has announced that people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland will be able to apply for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) entirely online from next year.

New claims for PIP have been replaced in Scotland by Adult Disability Payment and are no longer processed by the DWP. The ‘PIP online apply service’ is currently being offered to just 60 new claimants per day while the new system is being tested.

Making a claim for PIP online is completely voluntary and people can opt to apply by post instead, however, Minister for Disabled People and Work and Health, Tom Pursglove, told MPs during a debate around PIP assessment processes, that being able to complete the whole application journey online may also reduce decision-making time as supporting evidence and documents can be uploaded instantly.

New PIP claims are currently taking 13 weeks from initial submission to award decision letters being sent out.Mr Pursglove explained: “The online service is optional; it is a voluntary alternative to the existing method for claiming PIP.
