DWP addresses Universal Credit move amid warning of 'misery for thousands'

A warning has been issued to thousands of people over changes to Universal Credit by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

MPs have cautioned that any mishaps in the transition from older 'legacy benefits' to Universal Credit could result in "real-world misery for thousands".

The DWP has been told it must ensure it supports claimants, some of whom are "vulnerable", to make the switch without losing their benefits, according to a report.

The DWP has maintained that benefits are only ever halted as a last resort after multiple unsuccessful attempts to engage with an individual.
