'Dune: Part 2' Score Is Not Eligible For 2025 Oscars, Reason Why Revealed

The score for Dune: Part Two is not able to compete at the upcoming 2025 Academy Awards. The first movie was nominated for and won several awards at the 2022 Oscars ceremony, including Best Sound, Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography and, of course, Best Original Score for Hans Zimmer.

However, Hans‘ score for the second movie has been deemed ineligible at the 2025 ceremony, which will take place in March. Keep reading to find out why… According to Variety, the score for Dune: Part Two is not eligible “due to surpassing the Academy’s limit on pre-existing music.” “In cases such as sequels and franchises from any media, the score must not use more than 20% of pre-existing themes and music borrowed from previous scores in the franchise,” the Academy’s rules state. Hans‘ score for the second film “incorporates substantial elements from his work on 2021′s Dune,” therefore causing it to fall out of the eligibility requirements.

If you didn’t know, Hans is a twelve time Academy Award nominee and a two time winner, picking up the Best Original Score award for 1994′s The Lion King and Dune.

While it may not be eligible for the Oscars, it could be nominated at other awards shows, including the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, the BAFTAs and the Grammys!
