A Dumfries councillor was stunned to discover that the authority has a budget of just £50,000 for repairs to structures in the Nithsdale area.
According to Nith ward member David Slater, the “incredible” figure equates to about £169 per bridge. Mr Slater recently raised concerns about the maintenance of the Suspension Bridge on the Whitesands.
And in a response from the local authority he was told the £50,000 Nithsdale area structures maintenance budget is to cover 295 structures including bridges, retaining walls and the Caul.
Mr Slater told the Standard: “That figure to me is unbelievable ... £50,000 for 295 bridges works out at £169.50 per bridge.
