Dumfries and Galloway is one of the worst areas in the UK for the persecution of birds of prey. RSPB’s new Birdcrime report shows there have been 1,529 cases of birds of prey being illegally killed across the UK in the past 15 years.
Of those, 400 cases were in Scotland, with 37 confirmed cases in Dumfries and Galloway. That is the sixth highest area among Scotland’s 32 council areas and the 11th highest county figure in the whole of the UK.
Birds being killed include golden eagles, hen harriers and goshawks. One example came late last year involving a golden eagle known as Merrick, which was relocated to the region in 2022 through the South of Scotland Golden Eagle project.
In October last year, her satellite tag suddenly stopped transmitting and blood and feathers were found at her known roost site.
