The owner of a popular Dumbarton pizzeria has hit out at energy companies over putting local businesses out of business, as he admits that he is ‘up to his eyeballs in debt’ as he tries to ‘innovate’ out of it.Dumbarton stalwart Bangin’ Pizza has become an integral part of the local community after DJ pals Stephen Kirkwood, and Steven Galloni opened the shop during lockdown.Despite recently being named runner-up in the prestigious Scottish Italian Awards Best Pizza prize, the Dumbarton East pizzeria is struggling to manage its rising energy costs.Founder Stephen Kirkwood has hit out at the pressure being put on local businesses by energy companies.He said: “The insane energy bills are only getting worse.“We have local businesses like Julie’s Kitchen having to shut down for good due to energy prices.

It is not sustainable.“She was super busy, but when you are facing energy bills of over £2500, then you will struggle.“She was having to put herself into debt, and has had to shut the shop for good due to these greedy energy companies.“I am fearful for the local economy because more businesses will close if nothing is done.”To try and ease the pressure of energy costs on his business, Stephen has opened up a second store in Johnstone and purchased a woodfire pizza trailer.Stephen explained: “For us, trying to expand will allow us to bring in extra income.
