Dries Mertens said it was “tough to pull that shirt on” after the Napoli side all wore Diego Maradona’s legendary No10 shirt before Thursday’s Europa League match against Rijeka.
Maradona, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 60, is revered in Naples after leading Napoli to two Serie A titles and a UEFA Cup during a seven-year stay at the club between 1984 and 1991.
Napoli paid tribute to their greatest ever player on Thursday night, with fans gathering outside the Stadio San Paolo to lay flowers, sing his name and let off flares and fireworks before the players paid their own respects in a minute’s silence.
