Appearing on Good Morning Britain today, Dr Hilary explained that Derek had sounded "breathless" on the phone and that he had told him to go to the hospital.
This comes as Kate Garraway's new book, The Power of Hope, is released detailing the devastating impact the pandemic has had on her family.
Derek, 53, caught coronavirus last year and was hospitalised, before being put into an induced coma for months. He recently returned home but is still suffering the effects of long Covid.
