A dog was left screaming in pain and with its "throat hanging out" after a vicious attack by two Lurchers while out on a walk.
Del Roberts, 56, said his cross-breed mongrel Dutch was "ripped to shreds" before he could be freed with the help of two soldiers from a nearby barracks.
The injured dog then fled and ran a mile home alone, despite the horrific injuries. Mental health nurse Mr Roberts was walking his dog at around 9am on Saturday on a "literally deserted" field in Bootle, Merseyside, when the incident took place.
