A dog has been reunited with his owner after he fell down a 30ft cliff at the Ness of Sound in Lerwick, Shetland. Socks' owner, Jay McGill, had lost the Border Collie at noon on Saturday, July 16 and had been searching land for five hours.

He then contacted the Coastguard for assistance and Coastguard Rescue Teams and Lerwick Lifeboat were sent to the scene. Lerwick Lifeboat was launched at around 6.30pm and was by the Ness of Sound within five minutes.

Given the 11-year-old dog's location near the waterline, a decision was made to deploy the inflatable ‘Y-boat.’Soon, two crew members were able recover Socks to the lifeboat.Socks was a little subdued but didn't have any significant injuries despite his fall from a cliff thought to have been around 30ft high.

The lifeboat then returned to Lerwick harbour just after 7pm to return the dog to his owner on the pier in the small boat harbour.Relief Coswain Darren Harcus said: “We’re pleased to have been able to help with Socks’ rescue and to see him handed safely back to his owner."They did exactly the right thing by contacting the Coastguard when they realised that their dog was in difficulty, without putting themselves in any further danger. "We hope Socks recovers from the experience soon.” Don't miss the latest news from around Scotland and beyond - Sign up to our daily newsletter here .
