A doctor who was mistakenly paid for more than two years after losing his job has claimed he thought the money was a "gift" from the NHS.
Dr Haydar Al Nageim failed to flag up the error and pocketed more than £41,000 of NHS money from the Royal Liverpool Hospital over 27 months .
When he was contacted by fraud investigators he made "absurd" claims that he didn't question why the payments were being made. "At the time I received it, I was grateful for it and continued to receive it and I didn't question it because why would I question a gift horse," he told them.
