Diatom Deli recalls childhood magic on “Waves Will See (Your Smiling Face)”

Delisa Paloma-Sisk has spent the past seven years recording soft, eerie, acoustic music as Diatom Deli and touring it across the country.

Born and raised in Tennessee with Puerto Rican roots, she currently resides in an Earthship in Taos, New Mexico — a historic colony for outsiders from all disciplines of art.

She's now in the late stages of rolling out her third album, Time~Lapse Nature, which is set to arrive May 13 via RVNG Intl.

And today, she's premiering its third single, "Waves Will See (Your Smiling Face)," with The FADER. Like the record's previous offerings — "False Alarm" and "Disarray," the new song weaves a lattice of acoustic guitar over field recordings — in this case, the titular waves — to undergird Deli's multitracked vocal harmonies as she sings about a childhood coping mechanism that stretched misery into magic magic. "This song is about a hiding place I created in my bedroom when I was around 9 years old as a form of escape from hostile environments," she says. "I decorated it with a string of lights that fenced the perimeter of the lower bunk bed I shared with my little sister.
