He might be best known as Doctor Who, but David Tennant has never shied away from dark roles. And a new three-part ITV drama has been one of the most challenging projects of his career.
Des – a nickname the lead character used – casts him as murderer Dennis Nilsen. Between 1978 and 1983, he killed as many as 15 boys and young men at his homes in North London, making him Britain’s most prolific serial killer at the time.
The story is told with sensitivity, focussing on what happened after he was arrested rather than his killing spree, and it’s done from the perspectives of three men – Nilsen, DCI Peter Jay (Daniel Mays), who led the investigation, and author Brian Masters (Jason Watkins), who wrote the acclaimed book Killing For Company,
