Demolition of eyesore buildings in Johnstone begins to prepare site for new flats

Demolition crews have moved in on an eyesore Johnstone site where 35 new flats are to be built.Crumbling old buildings on the corner of MacDowall Street and High Street including the former Christian Mission and Knox and Finnie bakery are being torn down to prepare for the arrival of the development.Sharp Contracts and Loretto Housing Association received planning permission from Renfrewshire Council to build the flats across new three and four-storey buildings.The move will come as a huge relief to Johnstone residents with the site being regarded as a blight on the town for many years.Don't miss the latest headlines from around Renfrewshire.

Sign up to our newsletters here.Councillor Andy Doig, who represents the area, said the state of buildings was one of the first things he raised when he became an elected member 10 years ago.And he insists the new development will not only brighten up the area but also address an issue with a lack of flats in the town."One of the first issues I took up when elected in 2012 was the state of the former Christian Mission in the Millbrae and buildings in MacDowell Street such as the former Knox and Finnie bakery," said Councillor Doig."Johnstone town centre constituents were rightly incensed at the state of these derelict buildings and the very poor impression they created of Johnstone.“I think this has a double benefit for Johnstone."Firstly, the town needs more flatted accommodation as there are more single people than there ever were in the past, so this is a victory for the campaign to get more social housing where the need is."Secondly, another forty-odd people shopping in and around Johnstone High Street will be great for local businesses."It is very telling when the application
